There’s a moment that visitors to the Aspen Music Festival describe that’s difficult to put into words.
You’re walking through downtown Aspen on a summer afternoon and hear chamber music drifting from a park bench, an open window, or a nearby tent. It’s not part of a scheduled performance. It’s simply happening.
That’s what the Aspen Music Festival and School brings to Aspen every summer.
Founded in 1949, the festival welcomes nearly 500 students each year to study and perform alongside more than 100 artist-faculty members from leading orchestras across the country. The result is more than 400 events spread across eight weeks, from grand orchestral performances at the Klein Music Tent to free student recitals, family concerts, and community events throughout town.
Festival alumni include Renée Fleming, Yuja Wang, Joshua Bell, Philip Glass, Marin Alsop, Joyce Yang, and many other internationally recognized artists.
This is not simply a regional music festival. It is one of the world’s premier classical music institutions — and it takes place in a mountain town you can cross on foot in less than 20 minutes.

2026 Season Highlights
Opening Weekend (July 4–5)
- Free 4th of July Concert — Benedict Music Tent, July 4 at 4:00 PM. Patriotic favorites performed in a festive community setting. Bring a blanket and enjoy one of Aspen’s favorite traditions.
- Opening Sunday Concert — Renée Fleming (soprano) and Thomas Hampson (baritone) perform with conductor Robert Spano and the Kantorei Chorus. The program includes Ives/Schuman’s Variations on “America”, selections from John Adams’ Nixon in China, and Copland’s Symphony No. 3.
Opera Week (Early July)
- A Midsummer Night’s Dream — presented through Aspen Opera Theater VocalARTS (AOTVA), co-directed by Renée Fleming and Patrick Summers.
- Opera Benefit Featuring Anthony Roth Costanzo — July 7.
- Leonidas Kavakos Violin Recitals — July 8 and July 10.
Musical Theater (July 13–14)
Guys and Dolls in Concert returns as the festival’s annual musical theater collaboration with Theatre Aspen.
Conducted by Andy Einhorn and directed by Jeff Calhoun, this production features a full orchestra performing under Aspen’s summer sky as part of the Starlight Series.

Opera Season Finale
Mozart’s The Magic Flute closes the opera season on August 21 at the Klein Music Tent.
