Price vs Value: Affordable Aspen Vacation Rentals
Some people might tell you that the words “affordable” and “Aspen” have no business being anywhere near one another. But that simply is not true. While Aspen is a well-known playground for the affluent, astute and elite, it’s also a highly popular destination for everyday working folk. Yes, there is plenty of ritz, glitz and glam in Aspen, and it’s not always out of your price range.
When it comes to affordable Aspen lodging, there are some excellent options. There are also some not-so-great options, so knowing what to look for can be important. The better choices will provide some of the best “bang for your buck” when it comes to your vacation spending dollar. Aspen, affordably? Where do we sign up? Here’s everything you need to know about securing an affordable Aspen vacation rental any time of year.
Where to Find Affordable Rentals in Aspen
First, to find an affordable rental in Aspen, you must know where to look. For the most part, there won’t be anything affordable right next to the slopes, so you’ll need to consider being a little bit of a walk from the ski lifts. The great news is that this is Aspen, an intimate community, so you won’t have to go far. Instead of booking a slopeside condo, consider one that’s three or four blocks from the ski lift. If you’re willing to sacrifice a short walk to the lifts every day, you can save a lot of money. Choosing a condo that’s three or four blocks away will only result in about a five-minute walk.
You could consider a rental a little further away, but there’s really no need. Condos further away from the lifts are probably not going to be much cheaper. There is such a premium on slopeside, ski-in, ski-out accessibility, that either it’s offered, or it isn’t. Around the ski lifts are a high concentration of luxury fractional-ownership resorts. Those residences require a two-week commitment, meaning that you have to stay 14 days, and, in most cases, you have to be a member of the resort and pay dues and fees, or be an owner.
What to Expect with An Affordable Aspen Rental
You might think that an affordable Aspen rental might be an empty apartment with a leaky roof and a sleeping bag on the floor, but that couldn’t be further from the truth. You can actually get quite a magnificent residence with an affordable rental in Aspen.
A typical “affordable” Aspen rental will be like most upscale condominiums that you’d find anywhere – except probably a lot nicer. Most rental properties in Aspen are going to have one, two or three bedrooms. Each bedroom will probably have its own bathroom, or two guest bedrooms may share a hall bathroom. Most units have a master bedroom suite that has its own dedicated bathroom. Bathrooms either have a tub, shower, or walk-in shower.
Residences come fully equipped, so there will be bath towels, bed sheets and linens, dishes in the kitchen, plates and flatware, pots and pans, and other comforts of home. At a resort like Lift One Condominiums, the owners take great measures to ensure their units are stocked with everything you need for a relaxing vacation. All residences have fireplaces, and there’s even wood, fire starters and matches to get the fire going.
Pricing for Affordable Aspen Rentals in the Winter
The wintertime is the most popular time of year in Aspen, so that’s when the rentals are going to be the most expensive per night. Keep in mind that peak times like Christmas, New Year’s, Presidents Weekend and Spring Break (mid-March) are probably going to be the most expensive times of the year.
The good news is there is time during the winter for an affordable ski vacation. Early to mid-December is a great time for early-season turns on the Aspen slopes. In the weeks following Thanksgiving weekend and New Year’s, there will be fewer skiers on the slopes — especially during the week (the weekends are often the most expensive times in Aspen).
Early January, before Gay Ski Week and Winter X Games and early February up to President’s Day weekend are great times to get an excellent rate. Late March and April, following the Spring Break rush, is also a terrific time to score a fair rate on a condo rental.
Pricing for Affordable Aspen Rentals in the Summer
Largely, the summers are an affordable time to visit Aspen. Although it’s known as a ski town, there’s surprisingly a lot to do during the summers. The weather is exceptionally temperate during June, July and August, and temperatures rarely exceed 90 degrees. The cooler weather is a wonderful respite for weekenders making the trek up from Denver or Colorado Springs.
May and early June are a great time for an early summer-season visit to Aspen. The annual Food & Wine festival is held in the middle of June every year, and is a high-demand event that sells out every year. It’s expensive to come during that time, so aim for later in the month before July the Fourth activities come around. And don’t forget to check out more affordable mid-week lodging prices and discounts for longer stays.
Planning an Aspen vacation in the summer may allow you to stay for numerous days. You can hike, bike, play tennis or golf, kayak, whitewater raft, stand up paddleboard, swim, shop, visit museums, or enjoy outdoor patio dining at one of Aspen’s trendy restaurants. As any local will tell you, “We came for the winters, but stayed for the summers!”
