Best Outdoor Activities for Kids in Aspen

Ride the Silver Queen Gondola

Head up Aspen Mountain with the family for a scenic ride on the Silver Queen Gondola. The top of Aspen Mountain provides panoramic views of the spectacular Elk range, gentle hiking trails, a playground with a sandbox with loads of trucks, an 18-hole disc golf course and casual dining at the Sundeck. Bring a sweater and your sunscreen.

Hiking

Aspen’s trail system is quite diverse with trails for every age and skill level. After all, it is the original family fun activity! Trails like the wide and gentle Rio Grande Trail are perfect for younger kids, while adventurous families can explore the switchbacks of Aspen Mountain or Red Mountain or the breathtaking views of the iconic hikes at Maroon Bells or Conundrum Creek.

Biking

With Aspen’s scenic bike paths and multiple rental options that include both bicycles and e-bikes for every member of the family, Aspen is built to be explored on two wheels. Explore the town by bicycle or venture onto the more challenging mountain bike trails on Red Mountain or Snowmass Mountain.

Life on the Rivers

Introduce your kids to river life with a guided whitewater rafting trip on the Roaring Fork or the Colorado. If rafting isn’t for you, go for a peaceful paddleboarding session. Local guides offer fun and safe fishing experiences on the famous Roaring Fork and Frying Pan for everyone from first-timers to veterans and kids.

Explore the Maroon Bells

Make the most of a visit to Aspen by planning a visit to the Maroon Bells. Pack a picnic and enjoy lunch along the shores of Maroon Lake which is the most-photographic spot in Colorado. Stroll around the lake on easy trails or take the more challenging hike up to Crater Lake, keeping your eyes open for wildlife. You might be lucky enough to spot marmots, deer or possibly a moose!  Because of the popularity of the Maroon Bells, private vehicles are not permitted, so be sure to secure tickets for the bus well in advance of your visit. This is at the top of list for family fun!

Aspen Saturday Market

From mid-June to early October, the Aspen Farmers Market is the place to be on Saturday morning. More than just wonderful local fruits and vegetables, there are also booths selling all sorts of crafts and clothing and of course tasty snacks and treats.

Snowmass Mountain

Take the free RFTA bus to Snowmass and ride the Gondola up to the Elk Camp base area where adventure awaits.  The “Lost Forest” includes a zipline canopy tour, a ropes challenge course, the Breathtaking Alpine Coaster, a climbing wall, hiking trails, a trout pond and disc golf. The Elk Camp restaurant serves lunch and snacks all summer long.

Snowmass Rodeo

The Snowmass Rodeo, 5-9PM every Wednesday night through August 20, is the longest- running rodeo in Colorado. Visitors can check out exciting competitions like saddle bronc and bull riding, team roping, and barrel racing. Children can participate in the Calf Scramble and Mutton Busting or arrive early for the petting zoo. The barbeque dinners at the Rodeo offer something every member of the family will like.

Fun and Educational Activities for Families

Aspen offers a variety of family fun where kids earn and explore going beyond the trails and rivers.

Art in Aspen

The Aspen Art Museum offers free admission, interactive exhibits, and creative workshops suitable for art lovers of all ages. Plus, the rooftop cafe serves up delicious treats for hungry visitors to the museum. Don’t forget to be on the lookout for sculpture exhibitions scattered about town.

Aspen Music Festival

The Aspen Music Festival and School offers fun and inspiring programs for kids and families, world-renowned guest artists, and students who represent the best available talent on the globe, all of which are designed to spark a love for classical music. Check out “Music on the Mountain” or “Tunes and Tales” or try to catch the music students playing in front of Paradise Bakery.

Aspen Center for Environmental Studies (ACES)

ACES offers hands-on learning opportunities that kids of all ages will love!  Guided walks, family excursions, classes and story time activities are available.

Ashcroft Ghost Town

Ashcroft Ghost Town is home to several relocated and restored historical buildings in the picturesque alpine meadows at the headwaters of Castle Creek, where silver was discovered in 1880. Located eleven miles up Castle Creek Road, trails, interpretive signage and seasonal docents share the stories of the once-bustling transportation junction and mining town that at one time had a higher population than Aspen.
